Party leaders target government for shortage of oxygen, drugs, say House panel had flagged issue in Nov.
Deputy leader of the Congress in the Rajya Sabha Anand Sharma on Saturday said the Narendra Modi government must be held “morally and politically accountable” for the deaths of COVID-19 patients due to a shortage of oxygen and life-saving medicines.
While former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi asked the Centre to focus on oxygen shortage, vaccines and other health infrastructure instead of undertaking public relations activities and unnecessary projects (a reference to the Central Vista project), Congress general secretary Ajay Maken pointed out that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health had flagged the issue of supply of oxygen in their November 2020 report.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is recuperating well from COVID-19 infection at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here, a Congress leader said on Saturday. Singh is stable and is progressing well. He has had no episodes of fever, Congress general secretary and chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said.
The former prime minister was admitted to the premier hospital with mild fever on April 19, after he tested positive for COVID-19.
Mr Singh, 88, had taken the two doses of COVID-19 vaccine on March 4 and April 3.
Mr Surjewala said, We want to thank all Congressmen and Congresswomen, and fellow Indians for their wishes and prayers for Dr Manmohan Singh.

NEW DELHI: The Congress highlighted a shortage of Covid-19 vaccines in the country on Saturday with party leader Rahul Gandhi asking the Centre to focus on the issue, instead of spending on PR and unnecessary projects .
Pointing out that only 1.4 per cent of the country s population has been vaccinated so far, Gandhi, in a tweet, said India needs vaccines and shared a graph showing that the US has vaccinated 26.5 per cent of its population and the UK 15.9 per cent.
In another tweet, he asked the Centre to focus on vaccines, oxygen and other health services amid the Covid-19 pandemic, instead of spending on PR and unnecessary projects .
Twenty critically ill patients died overnight at Jaipur Golden Hospital in Delhi amid a serious oxygen crisis, officials said. "The oxygen pressure has dipped as we are running out of stock," Dr D K Baluja, the medical director of Jaipur Golden Hospital, said.
